Gerald Nowak, born in 1964, grew up in rural southern Germany. In his mid-20s, he began traveling and met the renowned underwater photographer Michael Aw in Manado in 1993. Since Gerald was already taking underwater photographs, Michael inspired in him the desire to constantly improve.

Soon after, he published his first article about the underwater world in the German diving magazine TAUCHEN. This marked the beginning of his career as an underwater photographer.

Gerald, who has now completed over 7,000 dives, is now a diving instructor trainer with the diving association FST.ev / CMAS Germany and SSI Diving Instructor International, a photography instructor, trimix and rebreather diver, and a passionate ice, wreck, and cave diver.

Whether tropical, temperate, or cool waters – anything that promises exciting reportage or great images has piqued his interest. He loves to put things in a special light and enjoys using various light sources to do so. Whether using Seacam flashes or Orcatorch's professional LED lamps, the interplay of light sources combined with the natural light of the underwater world is a challenge he enjoys.

He is now married to his wife Sibylle Gerlinger, who travels the world with him. Together they work as a team of journalists and photographers for the global diving press. Outdoor, travel, and sports magazines also publish their photos and reports. On various press and assignment trips, they have explored and reported on almost the entire diving world.

Gerald says: "I love diving in cold water. It doesn't matter if the equipment is bulky and heavy; as long as I have my camera with me and can capture the fantastic world beneath the water's surface, I'm happy. And even more so when I can dive and photograph together with my wife Sibylle."
