Dive Lights Advice for Aspiring Cave Divers

Media Reports

Dive lights are critical safety equipment, as it is dark inside caves. Each diver generally carries a primary light and at least one backup light. A minimum of three lights is recommended. The primary light should last the planned duration of the dive, as should each of the backup lights.

Here’s a guide on choosing dive lights, focusing on essential factors and specific recommendations.

1.Lumens

How bright it is. If your light is too bright, it drowns out other lights trying to signal you, and the reverse is also true.

2. Run time

it needs to have adequate run time for the diving you plan to do now and in the foreseeable future. A decent rule of thumb here, if you have plans to continue down the tech path, is to assume you want at least 2-3x as much runtime as the longest dive you foresee wanting to do in the next year or so.

Have you ever worried about running out of dive light battery while diving, especially during long dives?  OrcaTorch D630 v2 primary canister dive light understands your concerns. When the battery level drops below 10% (6.2V), its protection function automatically activates emergency lighting, offering 120 lumens with a runtime of approximately 5 hours to ensure your safety. This feature guarantees your safety, allowing you to fully enjoy your diving adventures without worry.

3. Spot focus

The ideal beam angle for the cave diving lights should be less than 10°.  The light beam is over 10°, making it hard to trying to communicate effectively in anything but really good visibility.

4. Beam Width

Tight beams are very useful, and basically necessary, in low visibility because you minimize backscatter; a wide light would be mostly reflected back at you, making it very difficult for you to see anything.

Having two D710 backup lights is essential for safety. These lights are compact, reliable, and provide sufficient illumination in case your main light fails.

While cave diving, having your hands free is crucial for exploration. The Mazu TD01 dive headlamp is an ideal solution. It features dual-color lighting - white and red. Working with the signal function of a red light helps you enhance the safety and communication on your dive. Easily mounted on your head, allowing you to focus on your dive without worrying about holding the light.
